An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Matron to join our well established team within the Surgical and Critical Care Division.

The Matron role is integral to the safe running of the hospital. The role will report directly to the Associate Director of Nursing for S&CC and will work in close partnership with the senior management team and become fully involved in the strategic and business development of the hospital to ensure that corporate targets are met.

The post will benefit from working with our existing Matrons on specific quality initiatives, and assist in setting up new services and maintaining standards, the post available is:

Surgical Matron this post will be based primarily at Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI) however you may be required to work across all of our sites as and when required. The RLI provides a range of surgical services including urology, ophthalmology, trauma and orthopaedics and general surgery. The Matron will provide strong leadership, and be a visible, credible, senior nursing presence accessible to staff, patients and their families for advice, assistance and support. The successful candidate will be accountable for maintaining patient safety and quality with the delivery of optimum patient experience in their area/s of responsibility.

This post is open to Registered Nurses and Allied Health Professionals. The post will be up to full time but are negotiable with a minimum working week of 22.5 hrs (3 days) available. Within your application please state your preferred working pattern.

We are looking for a highly motivated professional, with the possession of both a strong clinical knowledge base and relevant skill set. The successful candidate will have previous managerial experience in a substantive role and demonstrable experience in leadership and change management within a surgical setting. As the right candidate you will understand our strategic and care group objectives and be able to translate these to our staff.

Excellent negotiation, influencing and communication skills are essential and you must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate and sustain new innovative ways of working which facilitate developments in nursing practice.

You will be self-motivated and passionate about the care of Surgical, Orthopaedic and Critical Care patients, committed to improving service delivery and be flexible to the needs of the service.

It is also a requirement that the successful candidate will participate in the Matron on-call for the Hospital on a rotational basis.

Please note if you are shortlisted for interview you will be required to complete a Psychometric Test.

Details will also be emailed to you of a series of Psychometric tests which you should complete in accordance with the timescales specified. These tests will be conducted on-line in advance of your interview with full instructions supplied.

Anyone newly appointed to the Trust will be subject to the completion of a satisfactory 6 month probationary period (this includes bank staff). This will give the new staff member an opportunity to become familiar with the role and working environment.


An Interview will be held on Friday 14th June at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.
