''A great place to be cared for; a great place to work''

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious, dynamic individual to join our committed and well integrated multidisciplinary team, providing high standard care to the local community.

We are looking for a passionate colleague who is proficient in Stroke Medicine to provide acute medical and rehabilitation care to our patients. You will contribute in providing a high quality TIA Service. A new, modern Acute Stroke Unit was opened in September 2017 alongside a long-established Stroke Rehabilitation Ward. You will see patients in the Acute Stroke Unit, the Stroke Rehabilitation Unit (Ward 23), the TIA Clinic, and undertake Out-Patient Clinics. You will also be allocated time for SPA and clinical administration work.

The Stroke Service is a Consultant-led Service which is supported by two full-time, Stroke Nurse Practitioners who provide a seven day service, a full team of junior doctors (1 staff grade, 1 training ST3+ doctor, 1 IMT doctor, 1 FY2 doctor and 2 FY1 doctors) as well as skilled ward-based nursing and multidisciplinary colleagues who are enthusiastic in providing the highest quality of care.

The Royal Lancaster Infirmary provides an active acute thrombolysis service and also makes use of the specialist Telestroke On-Call Service out of hours and at weekends. There is an opportunity to join the general medicine On-Call Rota, Telestroke On-Call rota, or both

The post supports continued development of the Stroke Service and you will work alongside two existing Stroke Consultants, as well as a wider Care of the Elderly Team and General Medicine colleagues. You will also liaise with Neuroradiology, Neurosurgery and Vascular Surgery Teams, as well as Stroke Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Matrons, Ward Managers, Nurses, Therapists and Secretaries, to assist in providing excellent care to our patients at all stages of the patient’s hospital journey. You will provide clinical leadership to a dedicated team. Candidates should be able to show leadership in developing services for patients on the stroke pathway, which includes the TIA service and future plans for an ambulatory service

The Hospitals are situated on the edge of the Lake District National Park, surrounded by an area of outstanding natural beauty offering superb outdoor and recreational activities, particularly related to the sea, lakes, fells and countryside. Cities such as Liverpool and Manchester are merely a train or car journey away. With Lancaster being on the mainline for trains travelling to London or Edinburgh, you could be in the capitals within 2.5 hours. There is an on-site Nursery, should you require childcare facilities. Newly refurbished office accommodation and full secretarial support will be provided for the successful applicant.

We can offer you a commitment to teaching, education and audit. The University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust has a keen interest and deep involvement in medical and dental education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, so you could play an active role in progressing the knowledge and skills of these junior colleagues.  Medical Students from Lancaster Medical School receive the whole of their education, academic and clinical, in Cumbria and North Lancashire. UHMBFT is the lead NHS organisation and takes responsibility throughout the five years of the degree for the provision of acute practice placements.

You should have experience in Acute, General and Geriatric Medicine, with a special interest in Stroke Medicine, hold Full GMC registration with a licence to practice and be on the Specialist Register in both General and Geriatric, Neurology or Acute Medicine  or be within six months of obtaining your CCT award at the time of interview.

Those with sub-speciality training in stroke medicine will be encouraged to apply.
