This is an exciting time to join the medical division at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary with the opening of our new acute stroke unit.

The service allows all patients with suspected acute stroke to be admitted directly to a dedicated Acute Stroke Unit under the care of a stroke specialist multidisciplinary team.

The unit is a 6 bedded unit with 1 admission/assessment trolley. In addition the unit will be staffed to the British Association of Stroke Physicians (BASP) recommended staffing levels for acute stroke beds. This will be 2.9 nurses per bed with a ratio of 80:20 trained to untrained. Following the acute phase patients will be moved to Ward 23 which is a 24 bedded unit which hosts patient undergoing rehabilitation The unit is supported by the stroke team (ANP and CNS) and staff are all encouraged to undertake specific stroke training. Again BASP staffing guidelines will be adhered to.

We are looking for dynamic nurses to work in the unit and be involve with the evolution of the stoke pathway. There will be a focus on the development of robust systems for clinical governance, which will give assurance to the division. The development of the professional education is also an important aspect of this role, as it will ensure that staff are equipped with the right skills to carry out their roles. To enable staff to be involved in the whole stroke pathway, Staff will have opportunity to work  on the acute stroke unit and undertake rotational posts to update skills on all areas of the stroke pathway including outreaching to the Emergency Department, and on the Stroke Rehabilitation Ward.

You will also be supported to attend the ward management development course.

The department is committed to appraisal, to support continuous education and professional development. Applicants will be required to participate in providing 24 hour cover.

Anyone newly appointed to the trust will be subject to the completion of a satisfactory 6 month probationary period (this includes bank staff). This will give the new staff member an opportunity to become familiar with the role and working environment.
