Job overview

The post holder will be responsible for delivering high quality time-limited therapy to UHMBT employees referred to the Counselling Service following a bereavement, or living with anxiety, depression, work related stress, or other losses and their effects on mental health. This will involve providing comprehensive specialist psychological therapy, liaising with multidisciplinary teams where needed, and working autonomously within professional guidelines. The successful applicant must be comfortable in exercising personal responsibility for the systematic governance of professional practice.

Daily clinical casework primarily involves providing specialist therapy for individuals living with a range of issues. The post holder is expected to work only within their range of competency, seek regular supervision as deemed necessary, and escalate any concerns to the Nurse & Therapy Manager or Wellbeing Lead.


Main duties of the job

The role will mainly be carrying out Psychotherapy / Counselling on a one to one basis, both face to face and over the telephone. There may be some opportunity for group work.

You will also be require to participate in development of policy, Standard Operating Procedure, and guidelines for the Therapy Department.

The role will also require the successful applicant to carry out some teaching sessions and training sessions for staff members.

As part of the wider Occupational Health Team, you will work alongside the Occupational Health Team.

The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to be involved in teaching sessions, and develop areas of special interest.

The role Of an Occupational Health Psychotherapist will be positioned within the wider Occupational Health Team, providing services to all staff members of University Hospitals Morecambe Bay Trust. 

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre. 

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services. 

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses. 

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay

Essential criteria
  • Registered Psychotherapist or Counsellor, with UKCP, BACP or equivalent/.
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant qualification/study in spealist areas of interest Clinical courses relevant to working with the employeed population, and healthcare.


Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 1000 client hours clinical experience
  • Working within a multidisciplinary team
  • Evidence of recent professional development.
  • Experience of establishing effective communication.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of mentoring and assessing junior staff.

Skills Ability and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable/ willingness to undertake specific skills and training needs appropriate to working in Occupational Health
  • Knowledge of the role of an Occupational Health Department
  • Computer literate- can work with mutiple IT systems.
  • Ability to prioritise own workload, and work from a clinic diary.
  • Up to date knowledge of professional issues.
  • Understanding of current NHS issues

  • Presentation skills, open to delivering courses and teaching sessions.
  • Effective leadership skills
