Main duties of the job

You will be able to demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills, be an effective negotiator and have the ability to work under pressure.

  • Have continuing responsibility for the delivery of care needs and maintenance of Clinical Standards on the ward/dept.
  • Provide effective leadership and support to all grades of staff, planning and directing activities to provide the optimal standard of care.
  • Ensure that the ward/dept. is clean and provides a safe environment for patients and staff.
  • To deputise for the Ward/Dept. Manager when required


Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse
  • Specialist Training and short courses specific to role
  • Completed ALS
Desirable criteria
  • Recent Leadership development or willingness to work towards a leadership Qualification
  • Mentorship - teaching qualification
  • APLS
  • TNCC


Essential criteria
  • Over 2 years experience as Band 5
  • Understand the settings and monitoring of standards
  • Able to work with and as part of a MDT

Skills, ability and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate appropriate / specific clinical skills to designated area
  • Ability to prioritise and demonstrate time management and organisational skills in managing self and others
  • Demonstrate ability to obtain and evaluate information to aid decision making and to develop others in this area
  • Ability to manage the care of a wide variety of patients conditions
  • Understanding of clinical governance
