Job overview

The Risk Practitioner is responsible for risk management at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust and for promoting the principles of good risk management and developing the capacity and capability of Care Groups and Corporate teams to apply good practice.

The post holder will provide a visible, accessible and authoritative presence and be responsible for developing and maintaining a Trust strategy for Risk Management as agreed by an Executive-led group. This will include the design and implementation of initiatives to enhance and promote effective risk management, to embed structures and processes to ensure risks are identified, escalated, monitored and mitigated effectively including monitoring the effectiveness of strategy implementation.

The post holder will also work along side the Executive Team, and Company Secretary to identify the Trust’s strategic risks and provide leadership in refreshing the Board Assurance Framework

Main duties of the job

Be a credible leader, promoting a positive culture to enable proactive, effective risk management processes to develop.
Support and guide development and delivery of Trust wide transformation plans, working co-operatively with staff at all levels, initiating and leading improvement projects as required.
Provide expert advice and guidance to risk groups, committees and other key decision making and assurance groups.
Determine trends across the Trust, undertake investigations into themes and events to identify lessons learnt and bring concerns and solutions to the attention of the Executives, committees and risk groups.
Lead the management and maintenance of Trust Risk Strategies, Policies and working practices.
Overview risks on the Risk Register and Board Assurance Framework and provide meaningful reports to Committees and Care Groups which support oversight and management of their risks.
Plan, facilitate and deliver where appropriate, risk management training programmes across the Trust.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - 
Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the 
Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and   Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a 
number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice,                                 Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and 
Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services. 

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together
with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care 
including outpatients,  diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Essential criteria
  • Degree or qualification in risk management i.e level 7 diploma in Strategic Risk and Crisis Management or equivalent experience
  • Management qualification at Master’s level i.e. MBA or equivalent or relevant experience.
  • Evidence of Continued Professional Development.
  • Extensive NHS experience including a significant amount at senior level
  • Experience of working in the Risk Management Field
  • Experience of working in the NHS with Executive Directors, Care Group leaders and Board Members to oversee management of risk
  • Previous experience of supporting CQC inspection
  • Formal and informal teaching experience
  • Evidence of developing and monitoring of outcomes and output measures.
  • Evidence of developing and delivering strategic plans and policies.
