Job overview

Macular and Diabetic Retinopathy Intravitreal Injector

  • Work collaboratively with clinical colleagues to develop services and quality of care within the  Ophthalmology Department based at Westmorland General Hospital
  • The post holder will be responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing and evaluating the AMD service in collaboration the AMD Lead.
  • Provide specialist education and training to others
  • Lead the development of clinical services within the specialist field.
  • Provide expert care and treatment to patients within agreed protocols and clinical guidelines. The  Injector will also have the ability to make decisions outside these frameworks where necessary based on best practice.
  • Provide support within the ophthalmology team and act as role model and resource encouraging and developing a high standard of clinical skill and improving patient

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder carries professional, clinical and educational responsibilities for the Macular unit intravitreal injection service. They will have knowledge of both the AMD and the Medical Retina anti-VEGF intravitreal injection pathways and will work autonomously as an expert ophthalmic clinical practitioner. They will be part of a multi-disciplinary team providing professional and clinical support in the care of patients undergoing anti-VEGF intravitreal injection therapy. 
  • To undertake health assessments; diagnosing, treating and discharging
  • Perform advanced clinical skills in assessment and/or diagnosis and/or treatment

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre. 

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services. 

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses. 

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay
