University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay has been nationally recognised as the UK’s most inclusive NHS organisation. As such we have a firm commitment to strengthening the diversity of our workforce, and therefore welcome and encourage applications from likeminded people who can support our ambition to become effortlessly inclusive. We are particularly keen to hear from protected groups – including BAME, LGBT+ and people with a disability.

Job overview

We are looking to recruit 2 junior doctors to work in our Emergency Department for a fixed term of 12 months. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience in Emergency Medicine either to consolidate Foundation Training prior to taking up a specialism or as a first NHS appointment for a non-UK trained doctor.  You will see a wide variety of patients within a supportive training environment enabling you to develop a professional portfolio of clinical experience.

You will provide emergency care for a wide variety of patients from the local area and tourist population. You will contribute to 10 person rota with Foundation and General Practice trainees as well as other non training junior doctors. You will see patients independently with the full support and guidance of senior medical staff and Advanced Nurse Practitioners.

The Trust is committed to providing a supportive and inclusive training environment. We are a University Trust with established ties to Lancaster Medical School.

Main duties of the job

The Emergency Department has been recently refurbished with excellent resuscitation and minor injury treatment areas as well as a brand new Ambulatory Car Unit.

The post will be a non training junior LAS position equivalent to ST3.

As well as consistent clinical supervision, formal teaching is provided on a weekly basis and further life support training is available.

There are opportunities for quality improvement and audit activities as well as involvement in peer-led teaching .

You will be allocated an Educational Supervisor for guidance and advice on  professional development .

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
