Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated nurse to join our team in Ambulatory care. This is a nurse practitioner led unit supported by Acute Physicians; it is located adjacent to ED and ICU on level 4 of FGH and operates 7 days a week.

As part of the current drive to adopt the principals of same day emergency care, Ambulatory Care in Furness General aims to reduce pressure on the emergency department and offer an alternative to traditional inpatient stays.  This is achieved by directly accepting appropriate patients referred from primary care, for assessment, investigation and treatment with the aim to discharge on the same day.

In addition an active “pull” process is being developed to identify patients within ED who can be safely managed by the Ambulatory care team. ACU can also offer follow up services to facilitate early discharge from medical wards to reduce the length of an inpatient stay and safety net treatment decisions.

 

 

Main duties of the job

As part of a friendly proactive team, all staff are encouraged to progress clinically, personally and professionally and to be involved in the development of the unit. The department is committed to appraisal, to support continuous education and professional development.

As part of our team you will be required to:

Work effectively with the multidisciplinary team in order to achieve desired outcomes that promote the well being of patients.

Act as mentor or assessor in supporting and developing junior staff e.g. student nurses, return to practice nurses registered and unregistered staff through mentorship/preceptorship and induction.

Act as an effective role model for all ward staff.

Identify problems which effect planning and delivery of patient care and actively work towards solving them empowering others to make decisions.

Lead the ward as team leader or taking charge of a shift.

 

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
