Job overview

This is a new exciting opportunity for a current member of the Pharmacy team to become a Stores Senior Assistant Technical Officer.

Working within the Pharmacy stores and on the wards, the post will involve managing the workflow in the busy distribution and goods received areas, management of ward top ups and ward / departments expiry date checks, ordering and dispensing medications for in-patients, training current and new members of staff and training in purchasing.

You must be able to work as a team member and on an individual basis.

Main duties of the job

Working Pattern is Monday to Friday 8:30 to 17:00 with weekend and Bank Holiday work as part of a rotation.

This is a full-time position; we will consider a job share.

Previous Pharmacy experience and an NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy Services (or willing to complete as part of the role) is essential, together with competent IT skills and good basic education including English and Maths to GCSE level

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life-threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Our community services for adults are provided in people’s homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • English and Maths GCSE grade C or above
  • NVQ and Btec level 2 in Pharmacy Services
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of a recognised OTC sales course


Essential criteria
  • Experience in hospital pharmacy or other Pharmacy Setting
  • Experience in dispensing medications, drugs receipt, record keeping and cold chain maintenance
Desirable criteria
  • JAC trained
  • Experience with clinical trials
  • Experience with Aseptic preparation

Skills Ability and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of Pharmacy working procedures and current drugs legislation
  • Working knowledge of Health and Safety regulations including Control of substances Hazoardous to Health (COSHH)
  • Good communication skills, written and oral.
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to prioritise workload with good attention to detail and accuracy
  • Good manual, accuracy and analytical dispensing skills
  • Ability to work under pressure
